While we are in the Peoria, AZ area we plan to stay on the Wild Horse State Trust Land area.
It feels like we have come home! Can't believe how much we have missed having space around us. 2.5 months in RV parks is too long!
While in the area we plan to catch up with Matt & Melissa and friends.
Last time for us to visit Janice in her Scottsdale home as it is sold! Glad that Mark could join us as well as we had not expected to see him for dinner.
We did meet with other friends, Doug & Julie, Brad & Carla, Diana & Greg, Leslie M., Rick & Lisa, Bill & Robin but I was enjoying the time so much that I forgot to grab pictures :(
Matt & Melissa hosted us for a night on the town. Started off by visiting a Virtual Reality theme room...it was interesting, glad we did it but you spend the time on your own as you explore the reality. We did the Unreal Garden and Star Walk. I enjoyed the Unreal Garden more than Star Walk.
Really enjoyed our dinner at Coopers Hawk Winery and for dessert the Handel's Ice Cream was top-notch!
Just a quick stopover as we head towards Long Beach. Stayed at the Country Hills RV Park...very crowded but OK for one night.
Time for a little racing as we find out what the Grand Prix race weekend is all about. We have good hosts as Bret (who has attended this race many times before) & Michele (an in-person first timer to the event but not not a stranger to it as she has watched many on tv).
Staying at the Golden Shore RV Resort and we will walk to all events as the race is right here!
We have seats in Section 5 just in front of turn 1.
Ken & I strolled around Pike Market on the 18th and they were having driver autographs on one of the streets. As we arrived they were finishing up and taking the cars out onto the main road.
On our walk home, found a Bird of Paradise!
Headed out for some pre-race activities on Friday the 19th.
Our hosts for the event...Bret & Michelle! Bret was a wealth of knowledge and this event was made even more fun by having them guide us through the days. Thanks!!
Watched the Historic Indy Car Warmup...Bret tells us most of these vehicles are from the 1970's. Scroll right & left to see them in the Expo.
Ken & Bret enjoyed a Half & Half to end the day! Guiness & Lager.
Another day at the tracks on the 20th.
Started the day with me doing a butt dial to some of the Ottenbreit fam..however the phone was in my hand!
Not sure how it happened (I did have Facebook open that morning) but certainly not the first time...my phone has a mind of it's own...Fun anyways!!
Took in the Pace cars at the start of one of the races on the other side of the road from where our seats were.
The iconic round building that is in all the pictures for the race.
The professional photographers...
The start of one of the races. This side of the stadium seating is very busy and lots of choices for food and drink.
Part of the Super Trucks Race. Looks like they have two ramps that the trucks jump.
All Star Jam Concert with David Lee Murphy
Another part of the All Star Jam Concert with Gretchen Wilson
After seeing an hour of the concert we headed over to the blue entry about 7:30pm so that we could take in the Formula D Super Drift cars, however when we got to the gate about 7:40pm they turned us away as they were not allowing anyone in even though the race went until 8:30pm. Bummed we did not get to see it but enjoyed a view of the beach on our walk back home....23,000 steps for the day!
Race Day! 2024 NTT Indycar Series. I picked car #10 the DHL car based on the cool colors (red & yellow) driven by Alex Palou), Ken picked car #12, the Verizon car driven by Will Power. Spoiler alert my guy came in 3rd, Ken's came in 6th!
The Army parachuters made an appearance at the start of the race.
Landing on the track.
This was a trip much overdo! Finally made it to just outside of San Diego in El Cajon to catch up with Cindy & Ian. We figured it had been about 10 years since we last saw one another. Far too long and it will not happen again!!
Ken did not get any pics of where we were able to park the RV but we did make it up a steep incline (yikes!) to place it on the driveway by the house. Had some wonderful meals together with Ian's homemade hot sauce (Batch 1 & 2) and even left with gifts from their backyard orchard (lemons & avocados). We look forward to making more memories together in the coming years.
Perfect time of year to see the pink flowers in bloom.
Ken & I took a short drive to see Mt. Helix Park and view the 360 degree views of the San Diego area. It's too bad that we did not have a clear day as I think we could just barely make out the ocean in the distance.
The cross is at the top!
Looking up the stairs.
One of the views.
From the top looking down to the stage area.
I think this view had the ocean in the background.
Stayed here in a BLM area just outside of Yuma, AZ on the CA side. It's a pretty popular area in the winter. This time of year...not so much!
We did not set up in main area but found ourselves a nice secluded spot down the road. This was our first time in the area and it was OK. Next time would stay in the main area.
Setup Drinks...another successful drive down the road!
This area is near the ghost town area of Obregon. I don't think any of the townsite is left but we really didn't explore this area very much.
On one of our not too windy days, we walked towards the slag heap.
Found a Witness Marker (?) on the way home.
Survey Marker
On our last day which was very windy we drove around the area to do some initial investigation (and to find the main camping area!) and in addition to finding the main camping area we also found the Tumco Historic Townsite. Looks like something that we will need to come back and check out the town's points of interest.
Ended the day with a sunset that had color from all the dust that had been blown in the air. Unfortunately the color only lasted until the sun set.
The heat will be in the 90's for the remainder of the week so we are staying at a Thousand Trails Park, Encore Suni Sands.
It's an old park and there are not many people here (the snowbirds have gone home!) so we are able to have some open space around us. Not sure I would want to winter at this park as the sites are very close to one another, however the pool and hottub are great!
While here it has allowed us to catch up on some trailer maintenance and installing the front camera on the truck as well as laundry, haircuts and grocery shopping.
On our last day in the area we took the quintessential trip to Los Algodones in Mexico for a quick walkabout and lunch at La Parrilla.
